2020 Extra Special Fairtrade Pinotage (currently £5.50 in Asda)
When on song, South Africa’s often unpredictable Pinotage grape can still excite and delight, as this example from Breedekloof testifies.
Minty with sweetish hints, it uses vibrant acidity to enliven its rich cherry and plum flavours that combine here with suggestions of clove and chocolate and agreeably soft tannin.
2020 Soave (£5 at M&S)
Once a mainstay of trattoria wine lists, north-eastern Italy’s Soave is less popular nowadays yet can still provide lovely (but pleasingly inexpensive) white wine like this.
Light and fresh, it has floral, ripe melon and orchard fruit flavours supported by good acidity and herbal, apple peel and tangerine elements.

At Sainsbury’s
A new promotion at Sainsbury’s runs until the end of next week and includes this vibrant red:
