This week’s top tips and current promotions

A smooth fruity Rioja and a fresh aromatic Pinot Grigio.

Many of the promotions in place for the Bank Holiday weekend finish today or tomorrow, see below for dates and details. You’ll also find my top tips of the week which include an aromatic and zesty Pinot Grigio and a smooth Rioja both currently on offer.

2020 Roco Murer Trentino Pinot Grigio (£6 – instead of £7 until 4 May – at Sainsbury’s)

Pinot Grigio has many styles. Serious Pinot Gris from New Zealand and Alsace is rivalled by ripe, floral, peach-based options from Central Italy and fresher more acidic versions (like this one) from more northerly parts of that country.

Aromatic with an attractive zestiness, it brings orange and melon flavours embellished by lively lemon acidity and a pithy, apple peel substance balanced with savoury components.

2016 Morrisons Best Rioja Reserva (£7 instead of £8.75 until 4 May – at Morrisons)

Reserva is the second highest level on Rioja’s wine aging hierarchy (beneath Gran Reserve) and the consequent maturation process smooths this example out delightfully without blunting its fruit-like elements.

It delivers cherry and damson flavours with balanced tannin, good acidity, hints of vanilla, allspice and mint with a nicely contrasting background that combines a touch of sweetness with savoury edges.

Another Spring Bank Holiday promotion coming to an end this week, and another good value white to look for among the offers:

And now to a new promotion that started last week at the Co-op and is expected to run until 18 May. This popular Sauvignon is included but do check your local store for availability:

In this Thursday’s post we take a look at under-the-radar wines. The unfamiliar names that I think are worth taking for a “taste drive”.
