This week’s top tips and current promotions

A smooth and creamy South African Chardonnay and a soft and dark Shiraz Grenache.

As the sun finally makes an appearance, I bring you details of two great value wines from sunny South Africa – a smooth and creamy Chardonnay and a soft Shiraz Grenache. Scroll down and you’ll also find a round up of supermarket wine offers, including a new promotion at Morrisons which has a summery Rosé Prosecco among the discounts.

2020 Extra Special Chardonnay (£5.50 at Asda)

Modestly priced southern hemisphere Chardonnay need not be “shouty” – as this great value, new South African white illustrates.

Smooth with a creamy texture, it offers restrained pineapple, ripe melon and apple flavours enlivened by good lemon acidity tempered skilfully with suggestions of vanilla and similar (presumably oak derived) elements.

2020 Secret Cellar Shiraz Grenache (£5.99 – instead of £8.99 until 22 June – at Waitrose)

Secret Cellar (made by a major South African wine operation) has particularly impressed me with its Pinot Grigio but here provides an (equally successful) red blend.

Soft and dark, the result centres around medium-bodied bramble and prune flavours with mint, allspice and juniper elements, good acidity and balanced tannin.

Current promotions

At Morrisons

A new set of offers launched last week at Morrisons. If you’ve yet to try the newly authorised and increasingly popular Rosé Prosecco, this good value version is among the offers:

At Waitrose

A new promotion also started last week at Waitrose, and is expected to run until 22 June. Here’s my pick from the promotion:

At M&S

Late spring discounts at Marks and Spencer end today. I have yet to try it but this newcomer may well be worth a go at the discounted price:

  • La Bonita Lisboa Portuguese Red (Drops to £7 until 7 June)

At Co-op

And finally, current offers at the Co-op end tomorrow. As well as their Irresistible Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc, one of last week’s Top Tips, the following red is also a good buy:

Our regular “Pick of the Clicks” is back on Thursday, highlighting some of our favourite wines available online.
