This week’s top tips and current promotions

A South African Pinotage Malbec and a great value Languedoc Picpoul, both £7 or under.

My supermarket stars this week include a £7 South African Pinotage Malbec and a great value Languedoc Picpoul. Scroll down and you’ll also find the regular round-up of supermarket offers plus my top picks from each.

2020 Bruce Jack Pinotage Malbec (£7 at Sainsbury’s)

South Africa’s Pinotage can be a tricky grape variety which, without careful handling, can vary appreciably in quality. Here, Bruce Jack overcomes its volatility well, blends it adroitly with Malbec and, best of all, offers it at a great price.

This new vintage of the wine has well defined cherry and loganberry flavours with good acidity, controlled tannin and a herbal texture that contains a touch of sweetness.

2020 Paul Mas Picpoul de Pinet (£6.50 instead of £7.50 until 27 April – at the Co-op)

The 2020 harvest of Picpoul grapes in Languedoc benefitted from ideal weather conditions which resulted in a second successive vintage with terrific examples of that delightfully distinctive white wine.

With nippy pink grapefruit acidity yet contrasting softness and even gentle sweetness, this version brings us ripe greengage, cooked apple and tangerine flavours wrapped in an appealing herbal roundedness. Note, the offer may not be available in all Co-op stores.

Current promotions

Don’t forget the current promotion at Sainsbury’s ends tomorrow (13 April). See what’s included here.

At Morrisons

A new promotion started last week at Morrisons and is expected to run until the early May Bank Holiday weekend. This is my highlight from the promotion:

At Waitrose

A new set of offers also kicked off at Waitrose last week. This one we recommended 18 months ago is among the discounts:

At Co-op

The latest promotion is underway at the Co-op. Here’s one to look out for before the offers end on 27 April:

At other retailers

Promotions at Tesco and Asda both continue this week. See last week’s post for my picks.

In celebration of World Malbec Day this Saturday, we’ll be picking out the best Malbec buys from the High Street in our next post on Thursday.
