This week’s top tips and current promotions

A Picpoul and a Pecorino - two revived grapes for around £6.

A tasty Picpoul and a delicate Pecorino are my top picks of the week. I also bring you news of a short but sweet 25% off promotion at Waitrose which ends tomorrow.

2019 Pomerols Picpoul De Pinet (£6 – instead of £8 until 16 March – at Morrisons)

Picpoul has a great story of wine re-inventing itself. The grape was once the mainstay of Noilly Prat aperitifs but, when vermouth went out of fashion, it was transformed into a rival for Muscadet as “the” shellfish wine.

Versions from 2019 were especially good as this discounted option illustrates. It contains rich, apple, pear and peach flavours, lively grapefruit acidity, pithy texture and gentle saline touches.

Note, the discount depends on where you live. It’s down to £6 a bottle in Scotland, or on a ‘two for £12’ offer elsewhere.

2019 Pecorino Terre di Chieti (£5.49 at Lidl)

As well as a cheese, Pecorino is also Italian white wine, and one that was only revived relatively recently.

Floral and delicate, this great value example provides textured apple and lemon flavours accompanied by good acidity, hints of sweetness but suggestions of parsley, green pepper and savoury spice too.

Current promotions

At Tesco

Continuing the theme of good value Pecorino, Tesco’s Finest version is included in their current promotion which ends today:

At Sainsbury’s

A new promotion started last week at Sainsbury’s. Most offers will finish on 23 March although one or two may have different end dates. My highlight from the promotion is:

At Asda

The current set of offers continue at Asda this week. Another one that stood out for me was:

At Morrisons

The promotion at Morrisons also continues this week. Discounts are expected to run until 16 March but the usual geographic restrictions on multi-buy offers may apply.

At Waitrose

This week, Waitrose is offering 25% off all wine and Champagne priced £5 and over, when purchasing six or more bottles.

The offer is available online and instore until 9 March (although not in branches in Scotland, Wales or Jersey or at service or petrol stations).

We’re back on Thursday with a look the great value wines that are currently available from Eastern Europe.
