This week’s top tips and current promotions

A great value Bordeaux Blanc and a vibrant Chilean Merlot.

As well as the usual round-up of supermarket offers and promotions, this week’s post includes details of a great value Bordeaux Blanc from Aldi and a vibrant Chilean Merlot – on offer at Waitrose until tomorrow.

2019 Pierre Jaurant Bordeaux Blanc (£5.49 at Aldi)

Over 200 years before New Zealand’s South Island made the move from sheep farming to vines, Sauvignon Blanc was being produced in Bordeaux. And good Sauvignon is still made there today, often blended with Semillon for extra texture.

Here is a great example of Sauvignon at work that delivers those predictable fragrant gooseberry flavours and sharp acidity but in this case supported by sweet-edged hints of peach and melon.

2020 Luis Felipe Edwards Bin 31 Merlot (£5.99 – instead of £8.99 until 2 March – at Waitrose)

With much of the inexpensive Merlot light in both colour and texture, this dark and substantial version from one of Chile’s major players is very welcome.

The wine itself is vibrant and nutty with rich cherry and raspberry flavours, good acidity, mint and aniseed influences but only minimal tannin. Be quick if you want to try it at the discounted price, the offer ends tomorrow.

Current promotions

At Asda

A new set of offers kicked off at Asda last week and they are expected to run until 17 March. This bold, fruity red is among my highlights from the promotion:

At Sainsbury’s

Current discounts at Sainsbury’s are due to end tomorrow (2 March). Here’s a reminder of my top pick among the offers:

At Waitrose

The current promotion at Waitrose also ends tomorrow (2 March). If you can, this wine is well worth picking up before the discount ends:

At Marks and Spencer

Today (1 March) is the final day of the current promotion at Marks and Spencer. Head to your local store to see what’s on offer.

At other retailers

Offers at both Tesco and Morrisons continue this week. See last week’s post for promotion details and my highlights.

Now that celebrating special occasions is back on the cards, join us on Thursday for a walk through our Sunday Best wine selection.
