As I – and others – regularly point out, increased alcohol duty and general inflation have pushed up average wine prices significantly.
You can expect an £8 price tag for what would have cost £5.99 even four years ago.
Occasionally, a decent wine pops up well below that new level – and I feature it where I can – but such bargains are very much the exception.
The good news is that there is a respectable range of sound, reliable wine at that “new normal” £8 price point.
Not superstars of course, but wine that is well-made, typical of its style and ideal for lightening the gloom of evenings where, dispiritingly, actual darkness starts earlier and earlier.
Here are two such wines that I think fit the bill perfectly.
In the usual way, pictures (and, where possible, hyperlinks) are used to help you locate the bottle in question.
Starting with a white
2024 Irresistible Explorers Sauvignon Blanc (£8.65 at Co-op and 13% abv):

The Co-op’s award winning Irresistible range has built a strong reputation for quality wines at fair prices, and this Marlborough sauvignon blanc is no exception.
As a clue to what is in store, it is produced in partnership with New Zealand’s respected Saint Clair winery.
The result bursts with classic sauvignon blanc character, displaying fresh melon, gooseberry and apple flavours complemented by zesty lime acidity.
Nuanced suggestions of bell pepper, green herbs and tropical mango round out a vibrant and energetic example that shows exactly why Marlborough sauvignon is so popular.
Now for a delightfully crafted red
2023 We the People Cape Blend (£8 with a Clubcard at Tesco until 8 September – and 13% abv):

This South African red represents excellent value, especially with the current Tesco Clubcard discount knocking £1.50 off the price.
The wine showcases the expertise of Visio Vinters, who seem to work alongside the renowned Kleine Zalze winery.
Here they have created a harmonious blend of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and pinotage.
On the nose, you will encounter inviting raspberry aromas that lead into a palate rich with plum, blackcurrant and cherry flavours.
In support is a well-balanced framework, offering good acidity and mellow tannins while subtle hints of mocha, allspice and oregano add complexity to the finish.
See you again on Thursday when the plan is to turn attention onto a rather surprising set of short-term promotions.
