From Portugal’s Overlooked Grape to Languedoc’s Rose Garden

Two very different Top Tips this week share one thing in common – they’re both far more interesting than their modest prices suggest.

First up, a single-variety Portuguese red that many of us will never have knowingly tasted, despite it being the country’s most-planted grape.

From there, we head to the south of France for something altogether pinker and more delicate.

This is a rosé built for long summer evenings, courtesy of one of Languedoc’s most consistently acclaimed winemakers.

Which wine should I buy? 2023 Loved & Found Castelão

Why should I buy it? Castelão is Portugal’s most-planted red grape, yet still unfamiliar to many – some may recall it labelled as Periquita, its older name, and this bottle makes a persuasive case for renewing that acquaintance.

What does it taste like?
Berry aromas lead into juicy blackberry and plum flavours, brightened by fresh acidity, with a gentle touch of floral perfume and warm vanilla lingering in the background.

Where, how much and what abv?
£8.50 – down from £9.50 until 21 July – at Waitrose, 13.5% abv.

Roses and Rosé

Which wine should I buy? 2025 Jardin de Roses Rosé

Why should I buy it? Behind a charming backstory about his actual rose garden, the acclaimed producer here (Jean Claude Mas) has created a polished, well-judged rosé that works perfectly as warm-weather drinking.

What does it taste like?
Delicate cherry, strawberry and raspberry flavours take centre stage, backed by blossom and peach aromas, zesty lemon acidity, and minty freshness with a hint of orange peel.

Where, how much and what abv?
£9 – down from £10.50 – until 19 July with a Tesco Clubcard, 12.5% abv.

BONUS ITEM

2024 Nederburg Double Barrel Reserve (£11 – down from £14 until 21 July at www.waitrosecellar.com and in Waitrose stores and 14%):

While in Waitrose (or on the very reliable Waitrose Cellar) take a look at this relatively new full, smooth South African red currently on a handy discount.

Tuck it away until autumn starts to bite if necessary.

It is from the longstanding Nederburg operation who bring us a five-variety blend of grapes, all often associated with Bordeaux.

They were first matured separately and then again after being blended together (hence, double-barrelled).

Given a little time once opened, it provides rich mulberry, prune and fig flavours that run right through into a very long finish.

Accompanying components include inviting fruity aromas, mint, cedar, chocolate, and graphite traces and firm – but proportionate – tannin.
